What are Lutein and Zeaxanthin?

Both are carotenoids, antioxidants that fight free radical damage. Foods rich in lutein tend to appear orange, green, or yellow, and the yellow pigment in them is key to absorbing blue light. Blue light is very harmful to the eyes because it causes oxidation.

The eye is a delicate structure, and if damaged by free radicals, it can lead to diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. For this reason, lutein is sometimes referred to as the "vitamin of the eye". Zeaxanthin is also an antioxidant found in the retina and lens, and it is found in high amounts in paprika, popcorn, and marigold flowers.

How do lutein and zeaxanthin work?

The vision benefits of these carotenoids primarily come from their ability to help filter out harmful blue light, and they also have antioxidant properties. Why is it so important to filter out blue light? Blue light is shorter and more energetic than any other type of light on the visible spectrum, so blue light does more damage to our retinas.

Blue light is very close to ultraviolet (UV) rays, which are invisible to the human eye. Like UV rays, the blue light comes naturally from the sun. Electronic devices are also the main source of blue light exposure for most of us. More blue light is emitted from smartphones, tablets, computers, TVs, and other electronic devices than from any other light source, and because the average American adult spends more than 11 hours a day on electronic devices, it's not the same as the previous generation. Our exposure levels have grown exponentially compared to products.

What is the dosage of lutein and zeaxanthin?

Scientific studies have studied lutein in doses of 6.9 mg to 20 mg per day, with doses up to 15 mg per day being used safely for 2 years. Because of differences in product formulation, be sure to follow the directions on the product label to determine which lutein and zeaxanthin to take.
