How To Make Curcumin Water Soluble?

Aug 09, 2022 Leave a message

Turmeric is native to India and is now grown in most tropical regions. It was originally used as a spice for 2,500 years by now. Later, as turmeric was studied, its active ingredient, curcumin, was found to be known for its anti-inflammatory, joint pain relief, antioxidant, use as an acid-base indicator, and for its powerful antibiotic properties in the Ayurvedic family of products.

Curcumin is generally extracted from the root of turmeric, and the raw material of turmeric root contains only 2% to 3% of curcumin, which means it is difficult to extract high purity curcumin. Curcumin is an orange-yellow crystalline powder, slightly bitter in taste, soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and propylene glycol, and insoluble in water and ether, and this property reduces its oral bioavailability.

In recent years, the introduction of nanotechnology to solve the bioavailability of curcumin, the use of nano-encapsulated curcumin, long circulation time, strong permeability, good water solubility, anti-body metabolism, and other advantages, but there are leakage problems, in addition, the cost is also high, it is not suitable for most of the customer groups.

In the conventional curcumin extraction process, 1%-4% of natural water-soluble curcumin is formed, but most producers choose to give up collecting this part because the step of separation from common curcumin is too complicated. Given the increasing demand for water-soluble curcumin and the high price of nano-coated curcumin, we decided to develop an optimized process to collect this valuable portion of water-soluble curcumin.

We are currently producing water-soluble glycopolymers with curcumin side group residues by polymerizing curcumin with carbohydrate-containing substances. The resulting copolymers not only have a desirable water solubility but the solubility and dissolution rate have been substantially improved. The current purity can reach 10%, which is also our already mature product. You can refer to the following dissolution video to witness the effect of dissolution. The video may not be shown due to network problems or the clarity is not good enough, the pictures shown below are also available for your reference.

Dissolution times used: 1 gram of 10% water-soluble curcumin powder: 100 ml of pure water

Operating conditions are room temperature: 25℃

Placement observation time: 2 days

Final dissolution effect: clarity and brightness
